“Now that my sideboob has gotten your attention, Breonna Taylor’s murderers have not been arrested. Demand justice,” she captioned the since-deleted post. Fans were quick to react to her Instagram update and call her out for being “self absorbed” and “sick.”
Reinhart soon deleted the caption underneath her risqué photo. Not long after, she took down the entire post.
Reinhart took to social media to apologize for her Instagram post, noting that it was never her intention to offend anyone. “I’ve always tried to use my platform for good.… I also can admit when I make a mistake and I made a mistake with my caption,” she tweeted on June 29. “It was never my intent to insult anyone and I’m truly sorry to those that were offended.”
The actress also noted that she has been hosting Black activists on her Instagram channel. She has been a vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter protests. Reinhart has been encouraging her followers to educate themselves about systemic racism, to donate and to demonstrate solidarity with people of color.
“I’ve tried very hard to be honest on my IGTV lives that I’m still learning and trying to be better,” Reinhart continued. “But I understand that my caption came off as tone deaf. I truly had good intentions and did not think it through that it could come off as insensitive.”
On March 13 in Louisville, Kentucky, Breonna Taylor was killed when three plainclothes police officers entered her home with a no-knock warrant. They claimed they were conducting a narcotics investigation, but no drugs were found at her apartment. Taylor’s partner mistook the cops for intruders, and fired his gun in their direction. The officers fired back. A gunfight ensued in which Taylor was fatally shot.
On June 19, Officer Brett Hankison was terminated following his conduct. Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Robert Schroeder said in a letter that Hankison’s actions were a “shock to the conscience.” The other two officers involved in the case, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, have not yet been disciplined for their actions.
Newsweek reached out to Reinhart but has not received comment from her as of press time.
