On Wednesday, Lil Nas X posted a huge Instagram post of 10 pictures, mostly of the star in different outfits—perhaps teasing a new photo shoot or video?—but ending with a self-deprecating Squidward meme, showing the cranky cephalopod shocked under the caption “when I’m in a make s*** music competition and my opponent is lil nas x”.
In the post’s caption, Lil Nas X wrote “missed u guys,” and from the comments, it was clear his fans—famous and not—missed him too.
“missed u more,” singer Bella Poarch wrote.
“HE BAAACKKKKL,” OneRepublic singer Ryan Tedder said.
“thank god you’re back, i’ve missed flirting,” the official MTV account said (to much confusion in the replies).
“the sun is shining again,” artist Josefin Jonsson added.
Wednesday marked the return of Lil Nas X to Twitter as well. His first tweet back after taking a break from Twitter in December was “why are people surprised i’ve been away for so long? have y’all really never heard of maternity leave?”
In a photo shoot prior to Montero’s release, Lil Nas X pretended to be pregnant with the album, and even announced its release with a video showing him giving birth to it. The campaign confused some who wondered if he was somehow really pregnant.
He later said he was “so happy to be back on the internet,” and teased the release of two new songs—“Late to the Party”, a collaboration with Youngboy, and “Down Souf Hoes” featuring Saucy Santana, which he described as a “strip club anthem.”
When someone asked him if that meant a deluxe edition of Montero was on the way, Lil Nas X said no—but that an entirely new album was “close to finished.”
And, of course, ever the jokester, he revealed the “true” reason he hadn’t been online.
“ok i’ll be honest i haven’t been posting online because i gotta bbl,” he wrote, referring to a “Brazilian Butt Lift,” a plastic surgery procedure.
Though when he first appeared on the scene with the record-breaking country-hip hop crossover “Old Town Road,” many took Lil Nas X to be a one-hit wonder, a flash in the pan. But as each new release garners massive success and critical acclaim, it appears he’s—thankfully—here to stay.
