‘Todo El Poder’ (‘All the Power’) A spoof on corrupt cops in Mexico City, with a police chief who impersonates Elvis and a filmmaker who keeps getting mugged. Biggest earner this year.

‘Sexo, Pudor y Lagrimas’ (‘Sex, Shame…’) Last year’s hit–the most profitable Mexican movie ever–is a story of damaged lovers in upscale Mexico City. Broke new ground with spicy banter about sex.

‘Amores Perros’ (‘Love’s a Bitch’) Prize winner at Cannes this year. Three powerful, violent narratives bound together, “Pulp Fiction” style, by a car crash and lots of dogs, dead and alive.

‘La Segunda Noche’ (‘The Second Night’) Largely financed by Warner Brothers; second in series of teen romps featuring eternal virgins, bad girls and hormone-crazed boys.

‘La Ley de Herodes’ (‘Herod’s Law’) Political satire about a political boss in the 1940s. First film to attack–and name–ruling party. Government helped fund, then tried (in vain) to ban.
