That Double-Take Cover

Photo illustrator Steve Walkowiak first created the composite image of George W. Bush and Al Gore featured on last week’s cover at the suggestion of Director of Photography Sarah Harbutt. “I wanted an icon that represented both men,” she says. “When I saw the final product, I knew that it would make a great cover.” Cover Director Bruce Ramsay had to agree. “It was instantly clear,” he says. The design generated a lot of mail – a fair number of readers thought the combined image looked remarkably like actor Chevy Chase. Jay Leno even brought it up during a monologue: “Did you see the cover of NEWSWEEK? It’s half Gore, half Bush. Think about it – what a nightmare this would be…You’d have a know-it-all who gets everything wrong.”
