THE COMPANY THAT HELPED revolutionize video editing is now taking the tape out of videotape. Avid Technology’s recently unveiled CamCutter digital video camera records 20 minutes of broadcast-quality images directly to its FieldPak, a removable 2.4 gigabyte hard disk that, unlike tape, can be reused thousands of times. No longer will cameramen be forced to return to the editing room to assemble their footage; the CamCutter allows them to do so in the field. Don’t expect to see it at your local consumer-electronics store any time soon, though. The CamCutter is priced at $38,000 to $60,000. Batteries not included.
