Fournette suffered the injury in a scrimmage Tuesday. LSU coach Les Miles updated the star running back’s status after practice. Miles said a tackler laid on Fournette’s leg after a run up the middle, according to the report.
“Leonard Fournette got a slight sprain,” Miles said. “He’s in a boot … It’s not terrible.”

Fournette is a leading Heisman Trophy candidate and ranked No. 3 in Sporting News’ Top 40 players for 2016. He rushed for 1,953 yards and 22 TDs as a sophomore. Miles did not specify a return date for Fournette.
The Tigers open the season Sept. 3 against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field.
“I don’t know,” Miles told The Advocate. “I know it’s not, in his words … He’ll be fine.”
The lead backup for Fournette is Derrius Guice, who rushed for 445 yards and averaged 8.5 yards per carry last season. Guice has made a positive impression in fall camp.
