In a viral post from the couple, shared to both parties’ Instagram accounts, Guaynaa gets down on one knee while holding Pons’ hand. She has her other hand over her mouth as if in shock—but in the subsequent photos, it turns out Guaynaa just had to tie his shoe. In the final shot, he kisses an unamused Pons on the cheek.
The couple first announced that they were dating in December 2020—also via Instagram.
“MINE [heart emoji] (it’s official),” Pons wrote at the time on a post that would ultimately get over 4 million likes.
Though it was only in December 2020 that the couple came forward about being, well, a couple, rumors spread for a few months following the release of the duet “Se Te Nota,” which means “You Notice” in English.
In August 2021, the two announced that they’d bought a house together. On her Instagram stories, Pons shared a few more shots of the house’s interior, according to Hola!, showing that there was still some remodeling and construction to come.
“Long way to go but gonna be great,” Pons wrote on the post.
The joke posted Monday is similar to a fake proposal seen recently at a Vancouver Canucks hockey game where—immediately before a real proposal—a man fakes out his apparent girlfriend by kneeling down, only to come up with a cup of beer to chug. The same couple, or at least a couple who looks suspiciously like them, appeared in another Kiss Cam prank the month prior, where the man kisses the woman, only for another man to sit down next to her soon after.
While proposal pranks like this can be fun, sometimes real proposals don’t always go so well. In a viral clip posted to TikTok, a man intended to propose while on a nature hike with his girlfriend. In the clip, the two cross a stream, but the man silently knelt down and presented a ring behind her. Unfortunately, she didn’t notice and kept on walking until she’s out of frame. She eventually realized her boyfriend wasn’t with her and shouted “What?!” right before the end of the clip.
Happily, that wasn’t the complete story. A longer video was posted showing the full proposal, where she walked back to him. She, of course, said yes, and the two embraced.
Newsweek reached out to Pons’ representatives for comment.
