On Saturday’s episode of College GameDay, Corso seemed to look a bit off his rocker. When it came his turn to pick a winner between Alabama and Ole Miss, he picked… Texas? Oops.
Other fans were concerned when they saw Scooter pick Florida over Texas A&M, and follow it up with a Florida State chop. But not so fast, my friends. Corso played his college ball at FSU and earned both his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1957 and a master’s degree in administration and supervision in 1958. He’s always done the chop when picking the rival Gators.
There’s no doubt that Corso is a respected football mind. As a defensive back at Florida State, he set a school record for career interceptions (14) that stood for more than two decades. He then jumped straight into coaching, spending the next 11 years as an assistant before getting his first head coaching job at Louisville in 1969. Corso coached the Cardinals for four seasons before moving on to Indiana (1973-1982). He then returned in 1984 to coach Northern Illinois, and coached the Orlando Renegades in the USFL in 1985.
Corso joined ESPN as an analyst on the GameDay crew in 1987 and has been making college football more fun for fans ever since. But all good things must come to an end eventually, and with Corso turning 85 earlier this year, there will soon be a day when he won’t get to make us all smile as he puts on a mascot helmet.
But, luckily for all of us, today is not that day.
