Multiple wildfires have broken out over the past week in southern and northern parts of the state, causing California Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a statewide emergency.

The wildfires have been powered by ferocious wind gusts that have reached more than 102 mph. Fire conditions statewide have made the state “a tinderbox,” according to Jonathan Cox, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Of California’s 58 counties, 43 were under red flag warnings for high fire danger Sunday.
