But Leather Works Minnesota recently sent me their Front Pocket Flap Wallet to try out. It seems like a great option for minimalists who like the look and feel of leather but prefer a slimmer, more easily pocketable profile.
The Craftsmanship
Founded in 1999, this St. Paul-based family operation sources its leather from a combination of newer suppliers (only 50 years old) and heritage tanneries (150+ years old). Then their skilled craftsmen cut, burnish, imprint, assemble and sew together the pieces with durable nylon thread.
Because of the way the two pieces of leather interlock, I opted for the Black & Tan version. I like the way those two colors accent and play off each other. And it’s also a nice, subtle visual cue of where to put stuff (between the alternating black and tan pieces), not that it’d be a complicated process with any of the six single-hued colorways that are listed below.
The Size and Shape
Just 3 1/6 inches wide and 4 1/8 inches tall, this EDC had plenty of room for the relatively small wad of tri-folded cash I tend to carry. And though I never put more than six cards in it between the handy outside pocket and the inner sleeve, it probably could’ve cached twice as many.
The shape is fairly rectangular, but I like how the outer pockets’ sloping curves and inner pocket’s gentle arc offer a sense of style. It’s not flashy or multi-functional like some other wallets I’ve tested. Just simple, sensible and sturdy.
In addition to various wallet styles, Leather Works Minnesota also produces fine belts, purses and bags, dog collars and leashes, coasters, key fobs, and other accessories for home and travel.
The Front Pocket Flap Wallet is available in Chestnut, Mahogany, Natural, Oxblood, Black, London Tan, or (as shown above) Black & Tan. And they offer free monogramming.
