The airport said there was a report of a person with a firearm in Terminal 1 at around 7:30 p.m.

The resulting panic saw around 300 passengers self-evacuating on the runway at LAX and travel disruption for other flights.

During the evacuation, two people sustained minor to moderate injuries and were treated by the Los Angeles Fire Department, with one being taken to hospital for treatment.

In a statement, LAX said that there were no shots fired and no weapons recovered on Thursday night. Police also said there was no threat and no active shooter at Terminal 1.

It was originally reported that one person had been detained for further investigation, but LAX later confirmed a second person was also taken into custody by police. It is unclear why the two were detained.

Lt. Karla Rodriguez, an airport police spokesperson, told the Los Angeles Times that both people detained were men.

It is believed one of the men allegedly chased the other inside the terminal and that the man being chased thought the other male was armed.

Speaking to KABC, one woman who was in the terminal at the time described the panic following the reports of a man with a gun.

“I was like ‘what’s happening, what’s going on?’ and they said ’there’s an active shooter.’ So I packed up my stuff and I ran out, alarms started going off,” Chantel Mohn said.

Mohn said the panic started after one person ran into the terminal shouting “active shooter.”

“When other people were running, I started running too because my birthday is tomorrow and I’m not trying to die.”

Fellow passenger Donald Grady added that people were running in all different directions and there was “a lot of chaos.”

As a result of the security incident, the Federal Aviation Administration initiated a ground stop for flights at LAX. The Transportation Security Administration moved additional agents to Terminal 1 to get the passengers back inside, LAX said.

The airport confirmed that by just after 9 p.m. all runways were open and traffic began moving normally again.

Frederick Badlissi, a spokesperson for the airport, told KTLA that the disruption at LAX saw 11 flights diverted to other airports and 24 flights were delayed.

LAX Police have been contacted for comment.
