Chicago officers were alerted after Frances Walker was reported missing from her home in the 5900 block of North Washtenaw at about 7 p.m. on Monday. The caller, a woman who rented a room in the property, told the police she had not seen Walker for a day.

According to Fox 32, when police arrived, they were told there was another tenant living at the property whom the others were afraid of, and officers discovered human remains in a freezer. Chicago Police Department (CPD) said a homicide investigation is underway.

There were 528 murders in Chicago as of October 9, an 18 percent drop on the 646 murders that were committed by that date in 2021, according to the CPD.

CPD Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan told a news conference on Tuesday: “When police arrived, that individual told police there was another suspect who lived in the residence, that the other tenants were afraid of, and that suspect had recently called a tow truck and carried a heavy bag out to the tow truck.

“This tenant as well, who we really want to thank because they did a remarkable job, exchanged numbers with the tow-truck driver,” Deenihan added, “and we learned that this individual dumped a large plastic bag in the garbage can at Foster Beach, and detectives were able to go to that garbage can and see that there were some bloody towels in that garbage can.”

According to Fox 32, Walker’s body had been dismembered.

Police have since taken a suspect into custody, although they did not comment on whether any charges had been brought in connection with the homicide.

Neighbor Miranda Castillo described Walker as “very friendly” and added: “She’s familiar with everybody else in the neighborhood.”

Newsweek has contacted the CPD for comment.

In September, an as-yet-unidentified mummified body was found inside a bathtub at an Arizona home after police responded to reports of a burglary in progress.

Bullhead City Police Department was called to the property near 7th Street and Palm Avenue, in Mohave County, at about 3:30 a.m. on September 10.

Neighbors told police they had not seen the resident in about a year and said they believed she had moved away.

When police entered the property, they found Christine Lee Walters, 65, searching the home.

Officers later requested additional charges be brought on Walters for theft of credit cards, possession of dangerous drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
