The 41-year-old entertainer has appeared on the show’s second season to support his personal assistant Lisa Delcampo, who is posing as him to catfish the other contestants. To win $100,000 dollars, contestants must gain popularity by presenting profiles of themselves via a social media-like platform, using either their own or an adopted identity.
Delcampo’s profile as Bass states that he loves “various adventures like skydiving & training to be a cosmonaut,” prompting confusion among some contestants who didn’t know what a cosmonaut is. (A cosmonaut is an astronaut who trained in Russia).
In his 2008 autobiography, entitled Out of Sync, Bass recalled how he decided aged 9 that he wanted to be an astronaut after visiting Cape Canaveral during a shuttle launch.
At the age of 23 in 2002, Bass almost achieved his dream and was set to become the youngest person in space by shooting off to the International Space Station as a commercial passenger on Russia’s Soyuz rocket. A TV production company hoped to film the experience as part of a seven-part documentary series.
But due to problems reaching a deal on how and when to pay the $20 million fare to Russia, he was removed from the crew.
In his book, Bass said a strict schedule meant he had to start training before sorting the money. It was hoped sponsorship deals and a TV network planning to broadcast the show would foot the bill.
To prepare, Bass trained for four months, both at NASA’s Johnson Space Center as well as at Star City, Russia, earning his cosmonaut certification regardless of losing his seat on Soyuz. He even had an operation to fix his irregular heartbeat so he could fly.
Bass wrote: “What really hurt was that we had gone through so much and actually gotten so close. It was heartbreaking; there is no other word for it.”
The singer hasn’t lost hope that he will one day make it to space. He told Business Insider in 2016: “Things keep getting delayed and delayed, but eventually in the next five to 10 years I would say that once we’re really flying to space a lot more that I’ll be able to take that mission.”
Bass told Entertainment Weekly this month: “The good news is there’s lots of opportunities coming in the future for anyone to go to space so I’m working with a few companies now… Maybe I’ll be able to have a chance to fly in the next few years.”
