Here Newsweek looks at some of the Labor Day parades scheduled to take place in different states.

New Jersey

According to the NJ Carnivals website, the Mendham Pastime Club, a nonprofit, will host a Labor Day parade on September 6 from 10 a.m. local time in Mendham, a borough in Morris County in northern New Jersey.

The parade will begin at Main Street and Tempe Wick Road and end at Borough Park, where there will be a concert at the park’s gazebo featuring the Altman Brothers Band at 11 a.m. local time.

The parade is being held as part of the borough’s Labor Day Carnival, which has been on since September 3. The carnival will also feature a fireworks display on September 6 to close out the fair.

Florida

South Florida’s Okeechobee Main Street program will host its Labor Day Parade on September 6 from 10 a.m. local time. The event will also feature a pulled pork barbecue and other food vendors, well as arts and crafts.

Social distance and COVID-19 safety guidelines will be in place at the event, according to the program’s website.

Texas

The 75th annual Labor Day Parade in the city of Garland within the Dallas–Fort Worth metro area of Texas will take place from 3 p.m. local time, according to the Facebook page of the Noon Exchange Club of Garland, which is hosting the event.

The parade begins at Glenbrook Drive at Avenue D and will run north to Main Street. It will then head east to Fifth Street and north on Fifth Street before concluding at Fifth and Austin streets, according to the Visit Garland tourism website.

The parade will feature bands, cheerleaders and drill teams from all seven Garland Independent School District high schools as well as its elementary and middle schools, the website says.

Maryland

The 2021 Greenbelt Labor Day Festival Parade takes place on September 6, from 10 a.m. to noon local time in Greenbelt. Registration to attend the parade closed on August 27 but it can be viewed online via the City of Greenbelt, Maryland YouTube channel.

“Prospective non-registered parade participants WILL be turned away if you show up at parade check-in,” the parade website says.

The parade route will be along Crescent Road, from Greenhill Road to Southway, the website says.

Canceled Labor Day Parades

New York City

The Big Apple’s annual West Indian American Labor Day Parade, which was scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time, has been canceled.

The parade is held annually in Brooklyn on Eastern Parkway between Nostrand Avenue and Washington Avenue.

Los Angeles/Long Beach

The annual Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Labor Coalition Parade was canceled for the second year in a row due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

California’s Spectrum News 1 reported a drive-through food distribution organized by the nonprofit Labor Community Services will be taking place instead of the parade.

Charlotte

The annual Labor Day parade in Charlotte was also canceled due to the threat of the COVID-19 outbreak, Charlotte’s WBTV reported on September 3. The parade is expected to resume next year.

Parade chairman Ben Lee wrote in a statement: “The Charlotte Labor Day Parade is a genuine Labor Day parade put on by organized Labor on Labor Day to honor the struggles, sacrifices, and continuing accomplishments of organized American Labor.

“Have a good Labor Day, and please remember those who fought, suffered, and died for our worker rights, the 40 hour week, vacations, healthcare, grievance structure, and the never-ending fight against discrimination, intimidation and harassment. Please never take it for granted.”
