There were plenty of fans who had been clamoring for the Olympic gold medalist to go back to the WWE and finish out his career. Just one problem: the WWE did not want him.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Angle admits that his former company simply wasn’t interested in bringing him back. He reached out to Vince McMahon but that went nowhere and he was told that the guy he needed to talk to was Paul Levesque – aka Triple H. And that conversation didn’t go as he hoped.

Even though Angle and the WWE had an acrimonous breakup in 2006, it seemed like this would be a case of “time heals all wounds” and the company would welcome him back with open arms. Vince McMahon and Kurt Angle would finally make up and he would end his Hall of Fame career back where it all started. But there was no feel good story here.

For the Vince McMahon who I knew, enough was never enough. He always wanted more. I don’t know what was going on over there, but they even canceled our meeting. I never went to see them. They didn’t even sit me down and talk to me.

The belief is that one of the main sticking points was over Angle’s health and whether or not he could even pass a WWE physical. Angle has sworn in the past that would not be a problem despite him dealing with so many injuries over the years along with overcoming an addiction to painkillers. All of that easily could have scared the WWE off.

Angle – like many others – thought he could have gone to the WWE and had great matches with Daniel Bryan, Rusev and even Brock Lesnar. But none of those will be happening.

Angle also talks in the interview about the infamous time that he grappled with Lesnar before a WWE event early in Brock’s career as well as his favorite matches over his career.

Will I ever go back? I really don’t care. I’m happy to be here in TNA.
